Term 3 - Science Experiments - Fizzing and Foaming!
We started off this term with a bang - adding chemicals together to find out reactions. Mrs B made us taste the ingredients first and they were yuk! That is why our title is Yum and Yuk!!
We also practiced writing a scientific report and used this experiment as an example to help us get better at writing using scientific language. Below is the shared copy of our report, we will be using this as an example for writing future reports.

Yuk and Yum!
|
QUESTION.
|
If we mix vinegar and baking soda together will we observe some kind of reaction?
| |
THESIS.
|
Vinegar tastes sour and it is a liquid. Baking soda is a solid, soft white powder and it tastes salty and horrible. They are both food substances but based on their different taste, they must be chemically different. So, if they are mixed together, there might be a chemical reaction.
| |
HYPOTHESIS.
|
We predict that when we mix vinegar with baking soda an observable chemical reaction will occur. We might see and hear an explosion, fire, foaming, bubbles, fizzing or something else. The resulting mixture might look and taste different. There might even be a difference in the size of the materials.

EQUIPMENT
AND MATERIALS:
|
Baking soda
Vinegar
Container for mixing
Teaspoon for mixing
|
PROCEDURE
|
Step 1: Pour some vinegar into a container to a depth of about 2cm.
Step2: Use a teaspoon to measure in half a teaspoon of baking soda.
Step 3: Mix with teaspoon.
Step 4: Observe and record what happens.
| |
OBSERVATIONS:
|
At Step 2 the mixture started to fizz. A fizzing sound was heard, bubbles were seen to appear in the mixture and the materials rose higher in the container.
At Step 3, when the materials were mixed, even more bubbles appeared and the volume of the materials in the container rose even higher. When the mixture was tasted, the taste was
unpleasant and was similar to baking soda.hi

ANALYSIS
AND CONCLUSION |
The goal of this experiment was to see if an observable reaction would take place when vinegar and baking soda were mixed together. The result of our experiment proves that our hypothesis was correct. We predicted that there would be an observable reaction, and there was. There was lots of foaming and fizzing happening and bubbles appeared which mean a gas must have been produced. A quick check online showed us that the gas was carbon dioxide.

hi my name is viliami from wesley primry school and i really like you poem about the yuck and i really wish we did one to come and check out my class blog http://wpsmargetts.blogspot.co.nz/ and my one http://wpsviliami.blogspot.co.nz/
ReplyDeleteHi there name is Luseane and i am a student in room 3 at wesley primary school.I really like how you put lot's of detail and photo's.It made me think of my first time reading a doctor Seuss book.Have you thought about using paragraph's.If you would like to my blog is http://wpsluseanem.blogspot.co.nz/ blog you later!!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Team Moana & Yr 5&6 students at Ohaeawai School. We are also a yr 5&6 class at Tautoro School. We really liked how you structured your report and explained what was going to happen in your science experiment. We thought that you used good descriptive words like foaming, fizzing, explosions. It made us think of when we did this experiment. We talked about tasting vinegar and soda aswell. We would probably find it unpleasant too! We were wondering what was Yum? What did you enjoy the most? We think that maybe next time you could insert pictures to support the steps that you followed. If you would like to see our learning you can visit our class blog too http://room5tautoroschool.blogspot.co.nz/
ReplyDeleteNga Mihi,
Room 5 Students
Hello Team Moana. My name is Zephaniah and I am from Tautoro School. I am also in a year 5 and 6 class room. On your hypothesis, I really liked the way you predict on what is going to happen when you put the ingredients together. What I thought about it was that your procedure had great descriptive words in it such as fizz, foaming and explosion. I liked that you put the ingredients in because maybe one day me and my class might try it one day. What I think you can do is maybe next time you can use pictures on how you did it. If you would like to go to my learning blog, come to this link. http://tszephaniahe.blogspot.co.nz/. Blog you later!!!
ReplyDeletehi, my name is Gammado from Wesley primary school room 4 i like you want to rise money for a skiing trip and i think that you guys should a garage sail because that way you get rid of the things that you don't need. keep up the good learning.
