Term 1

This term we have been all getting to know the Year 5s and 6s.  With 3 teachers and shared groups, it has been awesome getting to know all 61 students. At present our focus for maths is statistics.  We are using e-ako, Maths Buddy and Studyladder to maintain our basic facts knowledge and for follow up activities for statistics. In writing we are working on specific areas of need that were identified from students recount writing.  In Mrs H's group we have written a creative story on Storybird, have completed a storyboard of the story and are now beginning to animate.  Each group is choosing their preferred method of animation - some are choosing to use Google Slides, some are using Stop Go and some are using iMovie - I cannot wait for the presentations next week! In reading Mrs H group is focusing on Finding, Selecting and Retrieving relevant information.  We are so busy as we h ave 2 projects on the go.  The first one is finding relevant information fro...

I was very impressed with our first handwriting sample of the year.  You will see your child's handwriting example on their Blog.  Below is the evaluation I have made of their work and what areas they need to work on.  You will see that there are quite a few who are ready to start cursive handwriting.  We will be working on this over the next term. Kerikeri Half Marathon

Image
Well Room 2, I did it!!  It was soo hard, but I struggled in to the finish line in 3 hrs 15 minutes. As you know my daughter and son in law were running the marathon - they were both in in 1 hour 54 minutes - Yikes, that was fast! Simon, my son in law was so kind, he came back to support myself and Mrs Gardiner for the last 3kms to the Kerikeri Domain. Luckily for us the weather started off overcast and breezy in the morning and we made it to the finish line before it got really hot! We saw Gina at the half way mark giving out delicious fresh oranges, Mrs Birchall walking, Joseph's mum and Kate and Jessica's mum running too.  I think there were a lot of people out there!

Pasta Week

Image
Well a challenging week of pasta this week Room 2!  There were a few surprises - and some interesting flavours amongst this weeks dishes. As usual I have to go for the groups who made their recipes from scratch - the meatballs with lasagne sheets, the meatballs on spaghetti, tasty macaroni cheese,. It was definitely a taste testing variety this week. Looking forward to some fresh strawberries on my palate next week - sounds very exciting what is being planned so far! I love the shot of the classroom cooking school! You really looked very professional with all those cookers and preparation going on!

Kai Team Challenge - Potatoes

Image
Well today's task was definitely more of a challenge. Preparing the potatoes, creating the dish and presenting all within an hour had some groups struggling for time. There was definitely some frustration when the potatoes would not cook quickly enough! However, all dishes were presented with all their trimmings and sides - definitely a yummy treat for Mrs H! Once again, very difficult to decide an actual winner, but there were a few where the potatoes were a bit hard, one or 2 could have done with a bit of extra flavour, but the presentation was fabulous once again.  I particularly enjoyed those dishes that were made from scratch again! So impressed with your skills!!

Kai Teams

Thursday 5th November We were set a 5 week food challenge.  We organised ourselves into cooking groups. The first week we had to cook something from scratch using eggs, the second week rice, third week potatoes, fourth week pasta and the final week strawberries. We have used local ingredients such as farm eggs, local home kill sausages, home grown parsley, Bok Choi, vegetables out of the school garden and home gardens. Each group has had to research the main ingredient, choosing a dish from another country and then recreating it as best they can.  The presentation has to include the original image and their own. It is taste tested by the teacher and then shared by everyone in the group.                                                                                 ...
