Miss D Rejoins Team Moana.

Well, we are very pleased to have Miss Dixon back with us one day each week, on Fridays. Mrs H is especially pleased as it means she now only works a 4 day week! Anyway, Miss D has been leading our maths learning on Fridays and she has planned a unit on geometry. So, far we have been learning about interesting shapes like ellipsoids and octahedrons and tetrahedrons. Some of these are very weird but we are learning how to say them and how to understand that their names give us a clue to their shape. You just have to do a little bit of learning about the ancient languages  Greek and Latin. Guess what else we found out? Humans might have invented these fancy tongue-twisting names but the shapes were here first. We just noticed what they were like. Did you know that many substances in the ground form themselves into octahedron or tetrahedron-shaped crystals?  Also, there are many fruits and objects in space that are ellipsoid in shape.
Last Friday was a lovely day so we decided to go on a geometry safari around the school grounds. We had to look for 2D and 3D shapes in the environment (natural and man-made), say what the shape was and say where we spotted it. We wrote lists and lists. We haven't had time to organise our photos of our expedition yet. When we do we will put them on our own blogs.
