NZ Book Awards
What an exciting day it was yesterday for Room 7. Mrs C from the Library had managed to get our school to be one of the judging schools for the NZ Childrens Book Awards.
There were a lot of books to judge so we had to plan it out carefully.
Our very successful Literacy Quiz Kids took on the challenge of choosing the best 3 Chapter Books, then we split into 2 groups, one judging the non-fiction books and one group judging the picture books.
Everyone was on task as this was a very important job we were undertaking. We had 3 piles, Yes - No - Maybe. We had to justify why the book was in that particular pile and then someone else check it to make sure. From our Maybe pile we then went through them again and had to make the difficult decision of Yes or No. Once we had the Yes pile sorted, we had a vote - each person was allowed to vote for 3 books.
This was a great exercise and gave us a great insight into the difficult process of judging. We hope we made some good choices - we think we did and wish all the best to all the authors. We are now waiting in anticipation to see if our choices are actually in the finals!

Thanks for bringing me up to date with the judging process for the New Zealand book awards. I do think it is hard particularly when I like alot of books. It could feel bad if you had a book in the awards and it didn't make it. I wonder if having people write encouraging messages would help those who mis out on an award.
