Term 1

This term we have been all getting to know the Year 5s and 6s.  With 3 teachers and shared groups, it has been awesome getting to know all 61 students.
At present our focus for maths is statistics.  We are using e-ako, Maths Buddy and Studyladder to maintain our basic facts knowledge and for follow up activities for statistics.
In writing we are working on specific areas of need that were identified from students recount writing.  In Mrs H's group we have written a creative story on Storybird, have completed a storyboard of the story and are now beginning to animate.  Each group is choosing their preferred method of animation - some are choosing to use Google Slides, some are using Stop Go and some are using iMovie - I cannot wait for the presentations next week!
In reading Mrs H group is focusing on Finding, Selecting and Retrieving relevant information.  We are so busy as we h ave 2 projects on the go.  The first one is finding relevant information from a non fiction book on the process of manufacturing some specific goods.
The second is following an online field trip with the LearNZ project.  It is really interesting about traditional waka voyaging.  We are learning about using navigation by traditional methods, health and safety, how a waka is built and the old traditional methods used.
we will have so much information to share by the end of next week.
Miss D is doing some great art with us on te Maunga, using hot and cold colours.  These look very effective and fit in well with our Te Maunga theme for this year.
So much to do, and so little time!!!

  2. Thankyou everyone for your comments. I am sorry you did not understand what I was trying to say about the teachers and shared groups. Please let me explain. We have divided the 61 students into 3 groups amongst the 3 teachers so we can manage our literacy and numeracy planning better. It has also meant we have been able to get to know the students better by working with smaller groups.
